Whilst, making a pop video in such an exclusive location doesn't seem that dissimilar from what the fashion world does in using such venues as mere backgrounds for the models and the clothes here, however, we can see something entirely radical. It uses the 'mainstream' as a Trojan Horse to smuggle in a cultural revolution. Beyoncé is, no doubt, a curatorial and archive activist using the mode of 'pop video', the most dismissed mass cultural product of mainstream entertainment, to re-curate the Louvre. She is correcting the absences and historical legacy of culture and taste built on a colonial, patriarchal past and inserting black bodies, black art, black icons and 'portraits' of black leaders where there are few to behold. She is using film to do so. Extraordinarily clever.
