"We always imagine happiness is somewhere other than where we are, that must be why there's so much suffering in this world."
Initially, this movie by Antonioni reminds me of Schubert's Der Wanderer (D493/D489): "Dort, wo du nicht bist, dort ist das Glück." (There, where you are not, there is the happiness.) Rather than solitude, it is restlessness that numerous earthlings face. In a certain way, the film interprets the conception of the song so well that I feel quite surprised.
It seems I'm getting into a peculiar habit (or hobby): relating nearly everything I've watched or read to Schubert-Lieder. Or I'm just more and more convinced, that in his songs you could find answers to almost every question.
Yet sometimes the final answer wouldn't come directly, in this movie's case, it arrives with the accompany of Grieg's Skogstillhet. Unfortunately, all the searchings are in vain, the restless man might never find his 'piece in the wood' here.
